Background

York Region is responsible for monitoring growth in its transportation network and implementing required infrastructure in a timely manner. As such, the Region’s transportation and roadway management strategies have identified future road network needs in the area of the 16th Avenue corridor, between Yonge Street and York-Durham Line. The Region’s latest approved 10-year Roads Construction Program has scheduled the implementation of works on 16th Avenue staged over different construction years, which are subject to change.

To further assess network needs within the 16th Avenue corridor, York Region retained iTRANS Consulting Inc. in July 2005 to carry out the 16th Avenue Class Environmental Assessment. The iTRANS team consists of a team of multi-discipline leading specialists. These include natural environment, heritage and archaeology, socio-economic, noise, hydrogeology and storm water management, structural engineering, geotechnical, illumination, and surveys. The study will allow for a comprehensive assessment of the potential impacts of alternatives.

Completion of this Class Environmental Assessment is part of the process to enable the Region to address both the short-term and long-term infrastructure needs for the 16th Avenue corridor.
